figured now would be a good time to remind everybody exactly who these people are and exactly how much they value trans people
(yes, I realize Birch is no longer with the organization, but this is not because they found her ideas repellant—it’s because she retired)
“We (Lesbian Feminist Liberation) found out there were plans to have a transvestite as part of the entertainment for the 1973 Gay Pride rally in Washington Square following the march and we decided to make a statement critical of transvestites…we decided we were going to stand up on that stage and tell everybody what we thought. We stayed up the whole night before the rally and typed up this little statement. We thought it was very important. You see, we were creating theory at the time.” Jean O’Leary, founder of Lesbian Feminist Liberation, later the first president of the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF)
“The transgender community was silenced because of a radical lesbian named Jean O’Leary, who felt that the transgender community was offensive to women because we liked to wear makeup and we liked to wear miniskirts. Excuse me! It goes with the business that we’re in at the time! Because people fail to realize that -not trying to get off the story -everybody thinks that we want to be out on them street corners. No we do not. We don’t want to be out there sucking dick and getting fucked in the ass. But that’s the only alternative that we have to survive because the laws do not give us the right to go and get a job the way we feel comfortable. I do not want to go to work looking like a man when I know I am not a man” Sylvia Rivera
“A case could be made that we should have included transvestites rights but I don’t think that gay people wanted to be identified with that. We were trying to get away from that image. And we were trying to get the bill passed. So the transvestites were excluded from the bill and they never got reinstated.” Jean O’Leary
“I thought free loving was the thing, I found it doesn’t pay the rent…During the daytime they all call us fags and freaks. At night I get even. I freak on them. I make them pay for all the insults they gave me. I can have a nice conversation with them, give them words of wisdom. But I’m getting back at them. My way.” Marsha P Johnson
Many of you guap@s may be heading out to Atlanta this week to partake in the Creating Change conference.
We can’t ask you not to go. However, remember the oppressive history of our community.
When you are in Atlanta, look around and ask yourself (and everyone in charge) where Sylvia and Marsha are? Where are their daughters, sons, and children? Because change isn’t possible if we do not center it on the most marginalized.
“One person, a MAN, Sylvia [Riviera], gets up and causes a ruckus.”
Also, critical reminder: remember that Atlanta’s “Feminist” Women’s Health Center, which asks for donations at Creating Change, is openly and proudly transmisogynist whilst offering hormones to trans men.
I’m not hating on the fact that they offer hormones to trans men, though a “women’s” health center shouldn’t be serving *men* and not *women*.
so, you might wanna know that if you are going to HRCing, er, Creating Change for Cis White Gay Men And Maybe Some Lesbians, they’re gonna ask you for money and you damn well better say hell no.
ps: if you want to support the basic right to abortion on demand in metro Atlanta without supporting misogyny and shameless transphobia, consider giving your $$$ to the WIN Fund instead. thanks. please support your local abortion fund, btw.

ok can I ask you a question, tumblr?
cis women who say “I hate trans men” creep me the fuck out and make me feel super unsafe
mostly because, surprise surprise, I’ve been severely mistreated and abused by cis women in my life along lines of cissexism, transphobia, and cis dominant power relations
WOW I am really scared to say this in public space! which seems to indicate to me that something weird is going on here
honestly a lot of the time cis “radical queer” women who say this strike me as just Very Uncomfortable with Trans People and, because of the circumstances of this historical moment in “radical queer” discourse, they’re allowed to express their transphobia in this way without facing consequences
but like—no one is more aware than me of how gross trans men can be??? but like—all men are gross that way and if you’re feeling the need to single out trans men and you’re cis you’re creeping me out????
please say helpful stuff; I would so so appreciate that
ETA: WOW “no one is more aware than me of how gross trans men can be?” that’s a fucked up thing to say, Stephen. sorry about that. I meant to say something along the lines of, “I spend a lot of my time thinking about how poorly trans men behave”
forever creeped out by cis “radical queers” who learn a little bit about trans politics and use what they know as an excuse to yell at or complain about trans people who do problematic things
learn the difference between inter- and intra-community conversations, pls
the “20 bucks or a knitted item if you provide me with more than 10 examples” challenge needs a clarification
in order to prove adequately that “transtrenders” are the ones causing all this to happen, you are going to need to prove that “transtrenders” are the ones causing these clinics to be shut down
otherwise, we’re having a conversation about what cis people have decided to call “transsexual regret,” which is an important conversation, but a wholly different one
ETA: to be clearer, and in part because a lovely person asked—
people might choose to detransition for any number of reasons! we don’t know what those might be unless they tell us. and we can’t reliably say that people who detransition all doing it for the same reason, can we?
“transtrenders” on the other hand, as they’ve been defined by “true transgender” discourse, are people who identify as trans just for the hell of it, or because they’re confused teenagers, or because they “want to feel oppressed,” or because they want to feel special, or w/e
it doesn’t follow that everyone who detransitions and sues a gender clinic must therefore be a “transtrender”!
so, in order to prove that there’s a real epidemic of “transtrenders” shutting down gender clinics, you’ve got to also prove that the people suing those gender clinics are “transtrenders,” not just people who’ve transitioned and detransitioned for any number of reasons
by the way, it’s also super fucked up to say that it’s detransitioners “fault” if gender clinics close down
it’s pretty obvious that the dynamics of finances, access, etc at work in a gender clinic closing down are more complicated than one person acting from a place of enormous pain
My point? a.) Transitioning can do some real damage, not only on family members but on the person themselves; and b.) Stephen Ira, you are incredibly privileged yourself coming from a liberal Hollywood family who has coddled you through every step of your life. Maybe transitioning has been fun and games and a “neat experience” for you, but not for me, oh no. I personally don’t want to receive $20 of anything (especially this radical queer knitting bullshit) off of you if you’re going to talk over people who have had it much MUCH harder than you ever have or EVER WILL HAVE, and then dismiss their evidence as to what is factual because it doesn’t jive with your comfortable little worldview bubble.
hey dude
I’m a survivor of ex-trans “reparative therapy”
I came out as a teenager entirely without adult support, faced such intense transphobia and cissexism during my adolescence that it traumatized me in ways that I’m just beginning to heal from, and later brought about my own medical transition, through no step of which was I “coddled” and during which I was frequently told and even ordered to stop
have you ever had a reparative therapist repeatedly tell you to drop this trans illusion because “who loves people like that?”
I have!
haha, there are plenty of games you could win against me, sure, but “who had a harder early transition” is a game I win almost every time
(Source: mattachinereview)
if you can give me more than ten well-cited examples of trans guys suing gender clinics after detransitioning and thus causing the gender clinic to fear allowing “real” trans men to access services—
I will give you twenty bucks and/or knit you an item of your choice
everyone likes a good bet, right?
we could do paypal, we could do a PO box, whatever makes you feel comfy
but obviously if there’s an epidemic there should be more than ten examples to cite, right? surely ten would be easy as hell to find?
surely you can find ten examples, if not to get twenty bucks or a knitted item of your choice (because gosh, knitted items are kind of faggy, right?), then simply to humiliate me in public?
Not trans guys*. It’s not only female born people who have done this. It’s people who thought they were trans both male and female.
“One of the most serious cases concerns a female patient who regrets switching to a male role. She underwent hormone treatment and had her breasts removed. The woman is one of the complainants in the current GMC investigation.
Other cases include patients who were allegedly prescribed hormones at age 16.”
This is in regards to the UK, where there have been people, yes, over 10 people, regretting their transition and then complaining about it. This has led to more gate keeping on this particular doctor. It is now harder to get prescribed by him because of regretters. Considering he is one in a few of private doctors, this is definitely a dis service to the entire British trans population.

Here’s another one. A psychiatrist actually lost his job because of people regretting:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2007/may/23/healthandwellbeing.health
Again with this person, it was over 10 as well.
Oh yes, the gender clinic which got shut down after regretters complained once more:
http://www.theage.com.au/national/sexchange-clinic-got-it-wrong-20090530-br3u.html
so you’ve given me one example of a clinic being shut down and two examples of cis people suffering? (spoiler alert: I am not at all concerned about the cis people suffering) which isn’t what I asked for?
I realized I may have misplaced a modifier, but I’m looking for more than ten examples of clinics, because that might begin to constitute a problem for trans people as a whole (not that we don’t already have larger problems)
an epidemic would definitely involve more than two psychs and one clinic
it would definitely involve more than one clinic
no knitted goods 4 u
there’s also a lot to unpack in these articles, but are you aware that at least one of their co-authors, Julie Bindel, is like, notoriously, FAMOUSLY, transphobic? are you aware that the guardian, which published not one but two of those articles, recently published an article titled, “transsexuals should cut it out”?
these are people who do not like us! they do not want us to access treatment! they think we should be morally mandated out of existence!
they want us dead!
they have obvious motivations for portraying us as unreliable, and for portraying transition regret as THE WORST POSSIBLE THING END OF THE WORLD OMG
so, “well-cited”—no, these aren’t
more than ten—no, these aren’t
includes a citation of an article partially authored by JULIE BINDEL
Julie Bindel
you will know them by the company they keep, honestly
eta: obvi I’ll unpack it more later but I have to go to dinner and I mean I just had to tell you—JULIE BINDEL!
it’s like saying, “yes, here is a reliable source on government and power structures” and then the source is Alex Jones
